Panther soccer finishes 6-0 in league with a shutout of Bayfield

Two fixtures in the week of October 19 closed out the autumn for Montezuma-Cortez. Nothing further is listed for any Panther team, at school or on the feed.

The week of October 19 was the last of the autumn for Montezuma-Cortez. Two teams were out, one at home on Tuesday and one on the road on Friday, and between them they emptied the school’s fixture list.

The week

Tuesday’s 6-0 home win over Bayfield, reported here on Wednesday, sealed a conference season with no defeat in it. Friday’s 13-60 beating at Delta, reported on Saturday, was football’s ninth and final game.

Where the season ends

Boys soccer is the story of the autumn at the high school. The varsity side ends 12-3, and 6-0 against conference opponents — the only unbeaten league record at any of the three county schools this term. Four of those six wins were clean sheets, and no conference side managed more than two goals in a game against them.

Football ends 2-7, and 1-5 in the 2A Western Slope, its one conference win coming at Gunnison in late September.

The other two autumn programmes finished earlier in the month. Volleyball’s varsity year closed at 5-16-1 after the October 17 home defeat by Alamosa; varsity softball closed at 14-9 with a 9-18 defeat by La Junta in a tournament game the same day.

What is still open

The state soccer tournament, and nothing else. Class 3A’s boys bracket exists as a page but has not been filled in: “This tournament bracket will go live when published,” it reads. Should the Panthers draw a home tie, the date will go straight onto our events calendar.

Everything else is quiet. There is no Panther competition on the school’s October calendar after the 23rd, its November page is blank, and the feed behind our scoreboards page holds no scheduled fixture for any Montezuma-Cortez team. Winter sports are the next thing due.

Season figures here were counted game by game from the Panthers’ pages on MaxPreps.
