Meet the Cortez City Council

The seven-member council seated in April has posed for a new group photo. Here is who is who, and how long each member's term runs.

The City of Cortez has provided a new group photo of the City Council, whose seven members have served together since April.

From left in the photo are Councilmembers Carly Wolf, Claire West and Clarisa Osborn, Mayor Dennis Spruell, Mayor Pro Tem Bill Lewis, and Councilmembers Kathleen Swope and April Randle.

Five of the seven seats were on the ballot in the April 7 municipal election. Osborn, Spruell and Wolf, the top three finishers, won four-year terms. Swope and West, who finished fourth and fifth, won two-year terms. Spruell was the only incumbent on the ballot; Osborn, Wolf, Swope and West are in their first terms.

Lewis and Randle were already on the council, and their seats were not up for election this year.

The new council was sworn in April 28. That night its members chose Spruell as mayor and Lewis as mayor pro tem. In Cortez the council picks the mayor from among its own members; the mayor runs the meetings and signs ordinances, and has one vote like every other member.

What happens next

The council’s next regular meeting is Tuesday, October 13, at City Hall, 123 Roger Smith Ave. The agenda includes a comprehensive plan contract, an affordable housing sign-off and two public hearings; our preview is here.
