Panther soccer stays unbeaten in league as softball sweeps Gunnison doubleheader

Montezuma-Cortez won four of its seven completed games last week. Football lost at home to Aspen and volleyball was swept twice.

Montezuma-Cortez had its best week of the fall on the soccer field and the softball diamond. The boys soccer team won twice to go to 10-2 overall and 4-0 in league play, and the varsity softball team swept a home doubleheader from Gunnison by a combined 34-6. Football lost at home on homecoming night and the volleyball team was swept in both of its matches.

Soccer

The boys varsity team won 4-2 at Bayfield on Thursday, October 1, then shut out Pagosa Springs 2-0 at home on Saturday, October 3. Both were league matches, and the Panthers are now 4-0 in league and 10-2 overall — the best record of any Montezuma-Cortez team this fall. MaxPreps has posted no result for either of the JV matches that accompanied them, at Bayfield on October 1 and at home against Pagosa Springs on October 3.

Softball

The varsity team swept Gunnison in a home league doubleheader on Saturday, winning 13-3 in the opener and 21-3 in the second game. Montezuma-Cortez is 12-6 overall and 5-1 in league. A JV game against Durango listed at home for Thursday, October 1 has no result posted.

Football

Aspen beat the Panthers 16-6 at home on Friday, October 2 in a league game — the homecoming date. Montezuma-Cortez is 2-5 overall and 1-3 in league. Our story on that game is here.

Volleyball

The varsity team lost 0-3 at Dolores on Monday, September 28, and 0-3 at home to Bayfield on Tuesday, September 29 in a league match. The JV team lost 0-2 at Dolores the same Monday. Varsity volleyball is 3-13-1 overall and 0-6 in league; JV is 2-9.

Next at home

Varsity softball hosts a Rifle doubleheader on Monday, October 5 at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 10 brings three home dates: volleyball against Centauri at 11 a.m., a softball doubleheader against Cedaredge at noon and boys soccer against Alamosa at 3 p.m. The next home football game is Friday, October 16 against Basalt at 7 p.m.
