Volunteer group is giving away trees in Cortez
Cortez Tree People will supply a sapling and plant it for free; the property owner has to keep it watered.
A volunteer group called Cortez Tree People is offering free trees to Cortez residents and businesses, along with the labor to get them in the ground, KSJD reported Tuesday.
The group provides a five-gallon sapling, six to eight feet tall, plus installation and mulch at no charge. What it asks in return is that whoever takes the tree looks after it. “We will be providing the tree and the installation if the person will provide for the maintenance,” organizer David Temple told the station. “You have to take care of the tree and water it.”
The trees are meant for private property near streets, and the varieties on offer were picked for drought and heat tolerance, according to the report. Smaller varieties are available where space is tight. Trees are given out first come, first served, and the organizers said the program could grow if more grants and sponsorships come in.
People interested can reach organizer Roman Jefferson at 970-560-4770 or David Temple at 970-749-8733.
