Woman sentenced to 10 years in fatal Cortez DUI crash
Shandine John received the maximum sentence for vehicular homicide in a March crash on East Main Street that killed a motorcyclist, Cortez police said.
Shandine John, 33, was sentenced September 18 to 10 years in prison, the maximum, for DUI vehicular homicide in a crash that killed a 44-year-old motorcyclist in Cortez, the Cortez Police Department announced.
According to the department, the crash happened at about 4 p.m. on March 24, 2026, near the intersection of Hawkins Street and East Main Street, when John, driving after drinking, struck the man’s motorcycle. He died of his injuries.
Police said John’s blood-alcohol content was 0.285 and that she was driving on a license revoked for a previous DUI. The department said there were multiple 911 calls and a REDDI (Report Every Drunk Driver Immediately) report.
The case is Montezuma County case 26CR44.
