Weather moves Mancos cross country meet onto town streets

The school district says the course had to be changed for the safety of the runners. The town posted a map of the route on Thursday.

Friday’s cross country meet in Mancos will be run through the town rather than on its usual course, the Mancos School District said in a notice the Town of Mancos posted on Thursday.

“The Mancos School District will be conducting the Cross Country Meet in the Town of Mancos,” the notice says. “This decision was forced due to the weather pattern currently over the region and for the safety of the participants.”

The notice is dated October 23 and carries a map of the changed route, a loop on streets around the school and the park. The Mancos schools’ athletics calendar lists the meet as cross country regionals, scheduled for Chicken Creek from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday.

The region has been under a National Weather Service flood watch since Wednesday afternoon, and the weather service issued a flood warning for part of Montezuma County on Thursday afternoon. Montezuma County’s road crews have been clearing rockfall and sinkholes on county roads since Wednesday.

The notice does not give a start time for the moved meet or say which roads, if any, will be affected for drivers. The town posts notices on the news page of mancoscolorado.com.
