Cortez police to take back unused medicines Saturday at Walgreens

The department is joining the federal drug take-back day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Pills, patches and sealed liquids are accepted; syringes and illegal drugs are not.

The Cortez Police Department will take in unused and expired prescription medicines at Walgreens, 1671 E. Main St., on Saturday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The collection is part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

Medicines can be handed in safely and anonymously, the department says. Tablets, capsules, patches and other prescription medications are accepted, as are liquids in sealed original containers. Syringes and other sharps are not accepted, and neither are illegal drugs.

Disposing of unused medicines properly cuts down on misuse, accidental poisonings and environmental harm, according to the department, which said unused prescription drugs too often end up in the wrong hands.

The notice went up Monday on the city’s news flash page and on the department’s Crimewatch page.

The notice gives the address two ways. Its opening line and the department’s own flyer say 1671 East Main Street; the line labelled “Location” says 171 East Main Street. Both come from the city and the police department.
