Cortez Farmers Market has two Saturdays left, and a flight to Fiji

The season ends Oct. 31. One vendor has spent the autumn serving a different country's meal each week from inside a small airplane; France is next, then Fiji on the last day.

The Cortez Farmers Market, at Mildred Road and Empire Street, has two Saturdays left in its season: October 24 and October 31, 8:30 a.m. to noon.

The closing weeks have an unusual draw. Fiji Craft, a food vendor, has been serving a different country’s cuisine each Saturday from a booth built as a small airplane, with customers seated inside for an “in-flight meal.” Saturday’s destination was Zambia: beef in peanut sauce with nshima, the maize staple, and hibiscus tea, the vendor wrote in a post that thanked the market’s manager, Julie, for bringing visitors and local spending to town. October 24 is France. The season’s final flight, on Halloween, is to Fiji.

“People from literally AROUND THE WORLD have sat in our little airplane in our little Cortez, imagining flight while sampling international flavors,” the post said. The beef came from Osterfeld Ranches.

Other vendors have been announcing last-of-the-season items. PanPan Sourdough said its chocolate croissants were back alongside its almond croissants, sourdough bagels and round loaves. The market’s regular produce, meat and craft vendors run through the last day.

After October 31 the next regular market in the area is the indoor winter season; the Current will list dates when organizers announce them.
