Cortez police give away bike helmets at the farmers market
Officers will run a bike safety course and hand out free helmets Saturday morning, before Oktoberfest takes over Parque de Vida at noon.
The Cortez Police Department will be at the Cortez Farmers Market on Saturday morning, September 26, handing out free bicycle helmets while supplies last and setting up a bike safety course for children.

The department says officers will be on hand from 9 a.m. to noon at the market, at 601 N. Mildred Road, to help children practice their riding skills. Kokopelli Bike and Board is providing free minor bicycle tune-ups. The department’s flyer asks children to bring their own bicycles and directs visitors to the Childrens Kiva parking lot.
The market itself runs the same hours, with local produce, baked goods, floral gifts, jewelry, crafts and live music.
Oktoberfest Cortez follows from noon to 6 p.m. at Parque de Vida, a few blocks away.
What the department asks of drivers
With both events running back to back, the police department says to expect more people, children, pets and bicycles moving around the area than usual. It asks drivers to slow down, to be cautious driving through the area, to keep a watchful eye on children and pets, and to respect designated pedestrian and bicycle areas.
Where to park
The department lists free parking on North Park Street and along Mildred Road, and in the lots at the Cortez Recreation Center, the Cortez Library, and the McAndrew Field and Rotary ball field lots. More parking is available at the Cortez BMX track and the Cortez Municipal Outdoor Pool lots.
